A two-part tambour secretary from the Mount Vernon Collection by Hickory Chair, made under license from the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and long since discontinued.
The upper case has a stepped cornice over a pair of glazed doors, the mullions laid out in interlaced arches and outlined in satinwood, enclosing adjustable shelves. Below, a reeded tambour rolls back to a fitted interior of small drawers and a row of pigeonholes above the writing surface. Five drawers in the lower case, each with a brass ring pull on a round backplate, the fronts crossbanded and strung in satinwood. It stands on square tapered legs ending in spade feet.
Federal in form and built to the standard Hickory Chair was known for: figured mahogany veneers, crossbanded borders and fine stringing throughout. Original retail was approximately $11,000.
Measures 86 in. high to the cornice, 38 in. wide and 24 in. deep. The writing surface is 29 5/8 in. from the floor, standard desk height. It separates into two parts for moving, and the lower desk section alone stands 40 in. high. Bookcase shelves are 35 1/2 in. wide and adjustable.
Condition: excellent. Glass intact, finish even, no veneer loss. Tambour rolls smoothly, key is included. Photographed in daylight with no filters; please see all images. Books shown for scale are not included (though are listed for sale)
From a private Boise, Idaho collection, purchased new by an interior designer for her own home. No smoking or pets.
