A handsome example of mid-century sterling silver design, this vintage ashtray combines clean modern lines with an unusually sculptural form. Dating to the mid-20th century, its understated silhouette and substantial sterling construction make it an attractive decorative object well beyond its original purpose.
The most distinctive feature is the boldly fluted, dimensional rim, formed from a continuous series of deep vertical grooves that create an almost architectural effect around the perimeter. The alternating raised and recessed surfaces catch and reflect the light beautifully, giving the otherwise minimalist piece considerable visual interest. Its gently scalloped outline adds another layer of movement while retaining the streamlined character associated with mid-century design.
Measures approximately 4.75 inches wide × 4.75 inches deep × 0.50 inch high. Weighs 63 grams. The piece weighs a substantial 63 grams and is clearly marked “Sterling.”The broad central well is smooth and highly reflective, creating an elegant contrast with the deeply modeled border. Its simple construction and polished surface allow the quality of the silver and the strength of the design to take center stage. Good vintage condition with light signs of wear and handling. While originally intended as an ashtray, its compact proportions make it especially appealing for repurposing as a small jewelry or catchall dish. It would be wonderful on a gentleman's dresser for cufflinks, rings, or a watch; on a vanity for everyday jewelry; or on a desk for coins, keys, paper clips, and other small necessities. It could even serve as a stylish bedside trinket dish.
The combination of solid sterling silver, distinctive dimensional fluting, and classic mid-century styling makes this a versatile vintage piece—equally at home in a traditional interior or alongside modernist décor.
