An unusually ornate example of a Victorian English sterling silver calling card case. Circa 1860. Attributed to Hilliard & Thomason of Birmingham, noted makers of finely crafted silver card cases, and small personal accessories. The case is exceptionally decorated with elaborate hand-engraved foliate and scrolling, finely shaded backgrounds and a shaped/scalloped border. The center features a large cartouche with an ornate period script monogram. The hinged cover retains its attached safety chain and finger ring.
The case bears a series of British silver hallmarks consistent with Birmingham sterling silver, including the lion passant sterling standard mark, Birmingham anchor assay mark, Queen Victoria duty mark and date-letter punch. The maker's punch appear consistent with Hilliard & Thomason (H&T). Because the maker's punch has some wear, I am describing the Hilliard & Thomason attribution as probable rather than definitive.
