A striking 19th-century American wall mirror crafted in mahogany and mahogany veneer, featuring an unusually elaborate silhouette of pierced and scroll-cut decoration. The tall rectangular mirror is framed by a molded mahogany surround and crowned by a dramatic shaped crest with scrolling cutwork and delicate foliate flourishes extending along the sides. A broad, shaped lower apron completes the architectural design.
The mirror retains a beautifully aged glass plate with extensive foxing, spotting, and losses to the original silvering. The wonderfully atmospheric surface gives the mirror the unmistakable character of an antique looking glass and contrasts beautifully with the deep, warm mahogany finish.
The reverse retains old wooden backboards and shows construction and surface wear consistent with considerable age.
At 40 inches tall, the mirror has substantial presence while its relatively narrow proportions make it particularly versatile. Beautiful above a small chest or console, between windows, in an entryway or powder room, or incorporated into a collected gallery wall.
