Beautiful vintage cobalt blue glazed art pottery planter in a classic urn form, featuring raised floral medallion decoration and flowing applied swags. Crafted from substantial red earthenware, the planter has a richly varied cobalt glaze that shifts from vivid sapphire blue to deep navy and nearly black around portions of the rim.
Based on its construction, glaze, earthenware body, and decorative treatment, this piece is believed to date to the early to mid-20th century, circa 1920-1950. Its appearance is consistent with European art pottery produced in France and Belgium during this period, although similar glazed earthenware planters were also produced by skilled pottery workshops in southern China. Because the piece is unmarked, a specific maker or country of origin cannot be confirmed.
The thick, irregular glaze, coarse red earthenware body, hand-finished surface, and molded ornamentation give the planter the character of traditional kiln-fired pottery rather than later mass-produced ceramics.
Originally intended for use as a garden planter, it retains a drainage hole in the base. Today it makes a wonderful decorative accent for French country, English garden, Mediterranean, chinoiserie, traditional, or eclectic interiors. It would be especially striking filled with hydrangeas, orchids, ferns, bonsai, succulents, or seasonal greenery, and also displays beautifully on its own.
