The word TABAC in bold letters across the front tells you exactly what this lidded ceramic pot was made for — and the Delft-inspired blue and white decoration with gold banding tells you it was made for someone who took their tobacco seriously.
Early 20th century French tobacco jars of this quality were made for apothecaries, tobacconists, and the well-appointed smoking room. The kind of object that sat on a shelf and meant something — to the room, to the person who placed it there, and to every guest who noticed it.
Today it holds whatever you'd like. Cotton rounds on a bathroom shelf. Small trinkets on a desk. A candle on a kitchen counter. Or simply nothing at all — sitting as the small, specific, beautiful thing it has always been. The maker's mark is clearly visible on the base.
Minor wear consistent with age and original use.
