A striking mid-century French ceramic aperitif serving set by Borty of Vallauris, dating from the 1950s–1960s.
The unusually long composition comprises five individually removable ceramic dishes arranged within a black twisted-metal frame with sculptural handles at either end. Alternating mottled turquoise and warm cream glazes are decorated with lively stylized zoomorphic motifs in turquoise, brown, black, ochre and burgundy.
Each dish has a slightly angular, individually shaped form, creating a wonderfully graphic composition when assembled. The undersides are hand-marked “Vallauris Borty.”
Originally designed for serving aperitifs, olives, nuts and hors d'oeuvres, the set is equally appealing today as a decorative example of postwar Vallauris pottery. At nearly 27 inches long, it has considerable presence on a dining table, kitchen island or sideboard and works particularly well in Mediterranean, French country and eclectic mid-century interiors.
