Vertical structures, rectangular planes and curved forms create an architectural framework in which order is repeatedly disrupted by shifts in proportion and direction.

A restrained palette of cream, grey, muted blue, ochre and brown is punctuated by deep red accents that introduce tension and movement. Working in oil on linen canvas, Sophie Dumont builds the surface through successive layers, combining palette knife and brushwork with scraped and partially erased passages. These traces soften the precision of the geometry and give the painting a distinctly tactile character.

Although resolutely abstract, the composition retains echoes of the vertical rhythms and accumulated structures found in Sophie Dumont’s earlier Library paintings. Here, however, these elements have become autonomous forms, creating an architecture governed by its own cadence.

The title À Contretemps — a French expression suggesting an offbeat, an unexpected timing or a rhythm that falls outside the expected measure — reflects this deliberate play between structure and disruption. See less
