Rendered in richly layered acrylic on board, the intimate composition depicts two white herons standing in reflective water below an autumnal country landscape. Two figures and a black-and-white dog approach a red-roofed cottage surrounded by expressive trees and jewel-toned foliage.

Despite its diminutive painted surface, the work possesses remarkable visual depth. Touches of blue, russet, ochre, green and violet are built up in a lively impressionistic technique, while the pair of wading birds creates a graceful focal point in the foreground.

The painting is signed “Judy O’Brien 03” at the lower right. The reverse retains a printed artist label identifying “Judy O’Brien, a.k.a. Judy O’Brien Galatha” and stating that reproduction rights were retained by the artist. A separate handwritten reverse inscription bears the artist’s name and a ©1994 notation. Because the visible signature on the artwork is dated “03,” the painting is cataloged here as a 2003 work. No title is presently known.

Presented in a narrow gilt liner, generously scaled cream linen surround and wide giltwood frame. The restrained frame gives the miniature painting a wonderful jewel-box quality and makes it especially suitable for a gallery wall, library, study or collected English-country interior. See less
