Sam Middleton (American, Dutch 1927-2015). The Artist worked primarily in the style of Abstract Expressionism and was a master of mixed media and collage. He often described as the first modern African-American artist in the Low Countries. Middleton is best know for his multimedia works in collage, and his association with jazz music. He first left the U.S. for Mexico in 1955 before moving Europe, living in Spain, Sweden and Denmark. After finally setting in the Netherlands in 1962, Middleton established himself as one of its leading artists. The Whitney Museum of American Art included Middleton in its 1962 group exhibition '40 Artist Under 40'
