c. 1930s-1940s; Sweet-Orr & Co. - Wappingers Falls, NY
Single-sided porcelain enamel advertising sign for Sweet-Orr workwear, featuring the company's iconic tug-of-war logo with six men testing the strength of a pair of overalls between the slogan "Job Tested for Strength." Produced in high-contrast yellow, red, black, and white enamel, this sign promoted Sweet-Orr's durable line of pants, shirts, and overalls, emphasizing both union-strong craftsmanship and industrial-grade resilience.
Founded in 1871, Sweet-Orr & Company was among the earliest American manufacturers of durable workwear, pioneering the modern overall and setting standards for industrial garments used in railroads, factories, and construction. The icon of the six men comes from the early claim that their workwear is so tough, six men couldn't pull the garment apart; if they could, each of those men would receive free clothing.
