Rather than the more … Read more A highly decorative circa-1930 carpet featuring an unusual allover geometric interpretation of the classical Savonnerie tradition. Rather than the more familiar floral bouquets and sweeping French-style medallions, this example presents a structured field of repeating octagonal, quatrefoil and cross-shaped motifs, arranged symmetrically across a rich chocolate-brown ground.

The design is particularly striking for its strong palette of crimson and ruby red, warm ivory, camel, turquoise and powder blue, deep navy, green and brown. The repeated motifs are connected by angular ivory tracery, giving the field an almost architectural quality while maintaining an attractive sense of movement.

A bold crimson border surrounds the field, decorated with large ivory geometric devices and small turquoise accents. An outer ivory guard with alternating pale-blue triangular forms gives the carpet a particularly distinctive finish.

The close photograph shows a substantial wool pile and sturdy construction, and the carpet appears to retain good body and color. It is in good condition for its circa-1940 age, with appropriate signs of use but a strong, complete overall presentation. See less
