Atmospheric English School portrait of a young woman dating to circa 1820, painted in oil on canvas. The sitter is depicted wearing an olive-green Empire-period gown and white wrapped cap, set against a dark background. Her direct expression, restrained palette, and softly modeled features give the work a particularly compelling presence.
Unsigned. The approximately 200-year-old canvas displays extensive age-related craquelure, areas of surface wear and scattered paint loss, along with evidence of historic repairs visible from the reverse.
The painting is presented in an ornate giltwood frame with scrolling foliate ornament and an elaborate openwork crest. The frame is a later addition and is not original or period to the painting.
