A striking matched pair of American gilt brass five-light figural candelabra by H.N. Hooper & Co. of Boston, dating to circa 1840.
Each candelabrum features the classical figure of Atlas supporting a large orb, surrounded by four scrolling candle arms with a fifth central candle cup above. Elaborate foliate ornament and finely modeled details continue throughout the sculptural standards and pedestal bases.
H.N. Hooper & Co. was an important 19th-century Boston manufacturer known for decorative brasswork and lighting, including chandeliers, girandoles, candelabra, and lamps.
Substantial in both scale and presence, this matched pair measures approximately 27.5 inches high by 18 inches in diameter each. Their sculptural classical imagery and warm aged gilt surfaces make them particularly striking as mantel, console, or library pieces.
