A striking late 19th-century Victorian portrait depicting an elegantly dressed young woman, presented beneath convex glass in an ornate oval gilt frame.
The portrait appears to be a period photographic enlargement enhanced by hand, a popular technique during the Victorian era. The sitter is shown with carefully rendered facial features, softly modeled coloring, and an elaborate upswept hairstyle characteristic of the period.
The substantial oval frame features a warm aged-gold finish, raised beadwork, and applied floral and foliate ornaments positioned around the perimeter. Its naturally aged surface, visible craquelure, and areas of finish loss give the piece an authentic, timeworn character.
The reverse retains an old backing inscribed “dated 1883” and “Emma Arbogast,” providing an intriguing historical association with the portrait. The inscription has not been independently authenticated.
A compelling decorative antique with genuine period presence, ideal for a Victorian-inspired interior, portrait gallery wall, eclectic salon arrangement, or historically layered traditional space.

The gilt frame displays extensive age-related craquelure, surface wear, scattered finish loss, small chips, and cracks within portions of the applied floral ornamentation. Some decorative elements show old losses and previous stabilization or repair. The portrait and convex glass show age-related dust, spotting, discoloration, and surface irregularities. The reverse backing and hanging wire appear to be later replacements or reinforcements. Please review all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
