c. 1900s-1920s; S. L. Allen & Co. - Philadelphia, PA
Early 20th-century "Planet Jr." cast iron single-wheel cultivator salesman sample featuring a large open spoked wheel, compact adjustable frame, and broad cultivating blade. The reduced-scale agricultural implement reproduces the functional construction of a full-size walk-behind cultivator, including bolted joints, adjustment hardware, and movable components. Its intricate cast wheel and timeworn iron surfaces give the piece strong sculptural character suited to an agricultural, industrial, or folk-art collection.
Founded in the 19th century by inventor Samuel Leeds Allen, S. L. Allen & Co. became a prominent American manufacturer of agricultural equipment, with its widely marketed "Planet Jr." line helping mechanize small-scale planting and cultivation.

Cast iron components remain structurally sound with no visible breaks or repairs. Remnants of a deteriorated wooden component remain attached near the rear of the frame, likely evidence of a former handle. The wood is heavily weathered, split, and incomplete as photographed. less
