Vintage wall plaque with a silver-plated wooden frame and protective glass. The sculpture depicts the profile effigy of Benito Mussolini, a clearly propagandistic work characterized by a strong expressive force and rigorous formal classicism. The casting technique is sand-cast bronze, originally enhanced with a refined gold-plated surface finish. Splendid traces of light still remain, emerging between the reliefs, creating a fascinating contrast with the oxidation and natural dark patina of time. Structurally, the work stands out for its original and geometric shape, an inverted pentagonal shield, specifically designed as a hanging plaque thanks to the through-hole at the top for wall mounting. The ensemble is enhanced by a vintage midnight blue velvet wall mount and a silver-plated wooden frame with protective glass. The decoration and sculptural modeling focus entirely on the volumetric rendering of the Duce's face, portrayed according to the canons of the regime's imperial rhetoric. Note the proud, square jaw, the high, assertive forehead, and the stern, left-facing gaze—elements that intentionally recall numismatic iconography and portraiture of Roman emperors. The production period falls squarely between the late 1920s and 1930s, the heart of the twenty-year Fascist period, and the place of production is Italy, established within one of the historic artistic foundries specializing in the supply of institutional bronzes and historical relics between Milan and Rome. The plaque is a typical unsigned work of high craftsmanship, devoid of visible marks or initials on the front, as was often the case with decorative and patriotic atelier pieces destined for public offices of the time, barracks, and private interiors. We attribute the work to production by the excellent medal foundries of the period, such as the renowned Lorioli & Castelli or the Sacchini Foundry, based on a prototype modeled by leading sculptors of Italian monumentalism. The reasons for this attribution are based both on the quality of the casting and the rarity of the pentagonal shield shape and the gilding, elements that distinguish this piece from the more common and later reproductions in poor metals.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
The production of bronze plaques, medals, and profiles dedicated to the figure of the Duce was one of the most pervasive and artistically significant phenomena in Italian sculpture in the first half of the twentieth century. During the regime, the need to disseminate the leader's image widely led the state and institutions to commission major sculptors and medallists (including names such as Giannino Castiglioni, Edoardo Rubino, and Publio Morbiducci) to create official models, which were then mass-cast by the finest national art foundries. Historic foundries such as the Stefano Johnson plant and the Lorioli & Castelli workshops employed sophisticated casting and minting techniques to produce plaques intended to immortalize historical events or decorate state rooms. This art form was directly linked to the glorious Renaissance tradition of commemorative medals and the classicism of ancient Rome, transforming bronze into a powerful cultural and decorative tool in which the artisanal expertise of Italian master founders reached technical heights of excellence, today historicized and widely documented in museums and modern art collections.
