This type of low, simply constructed table belongs to the tradition of Italian rural furniture and is often referred to as a shepherd’s table or tavolo da pastore. Comparable examples are associated particularly with the Alpine and Dolomite regions of Italy. Traditionally, these compact low tables were practical pieces of pastoral furniture, made to be easily used in a rural setting. Entirely constructed from solid wood, the table has a circular plank top resting on four simple shaped legs. Its primitive construction and restrained form give the piece a strong sculptural quality. The surface is particularly beautiful, retaining a deep, untouched patina developed through generations of use. Marks, irregularities, old scratches, openings between the boards and variations in colour are all part of its history and character rather than imperfections to be concealed. A wonderful example of Italian vernacular furniture that works equally well today as a low coffee table or sculptural occasional table. Dimensions: Diameter: 69 cm Height: 31 cm See less
