enchanting oil painting on vintage panel depicting a picturesque landscape of the lazio countryside, executed by the renowned roman master alberto carosi in 1944, signed lower right. The work is a precious example of 20th-century italian plein air painting, crafted with refined oil paint on a solid, well-preserved wooden support. The painting is enclosed within a contemporary molded frame with delicate internal gilding and a faux geometric carving, and a light-colored lacquered outer edge. The composition features a rural view dominated in the foreground by a snow-covered clearing bathed in a very clear grazing light, punctuated by elongated powder-blue shadows that convey a profound sense of space and a sense of silent suspension. On the left stands the most fascinating decorative and structural element of the entire panel: a monumental, gnarled tree, reminiscent of an ancient olive tree from the aniene valley. Its elegant, twisted branches intertwine with dense woodland vegetation in the background and with more slender trees rendered through chromatic nuances ranging from olive green to gray-blue, with touches of burnt earth. The most beautiful and important aspects of this painting, in our opinion, are the extraordinary sensitivity to light and the freshness of the brushstrokes, which capture the rarefied atmosphere of the morning, celebrating pristine nature in the finest tradition of roman landscape painters. The work was produced in 1944, and its place of creation and inspiration is the historic village of anticoli corrado, in lazio, as solemnly attested by the autograph inscription at the bottom right. On the front, the artist's signature is clearly written in dark cursive and reads "alberto carosi," followed immediately below by the precise geographic location and the date in roman numerals, which reads "anticoli mcmxliv" (anticoli 1944). The back of the wooden panel bears no further signatures or inscriptions, revealing the clean surface of the period wood, held in place by the original metal nails. We can confidently attribute this piece to the artist alberto carosi, both for its perfect stylistic correspondence with his celebrated mature work and for the presence of the signature and date, both contemporary and structural to the paint layer, which show no signs of subsequent retouching. The subtle, textured touches, the color palette of cool tones, and the unmistakable calligraphy of the signature are unmistakable elements of the work's authorship, faithfully embedding it in the catalog of his most inspired anticoli landscapes.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
alberto serafino carosi (rome, 1891 – rome, 1967) was a prominent figure in the roman art scene of the first half of the 20th century, celebrated for his mastery of both oil painting and the challenging watercolor technique. Trained in rome, his name and aesthetic pursuits were inextricably linked to the celebrated "i xxv della campagna romana" association, a group of artists who, rejecting academic rigidity, chose to immerse themselves directly in nature to portray the light, customs, and landscapes of lazio from life. Within the group, carosi distinguished himself for his sincere painting, capable of combining the rigor of traditional drawing with a modern and vibrant sensitivity to light. A key chapter in his biography is linked to his frequent visits to anticoli corrado, the splendid "village of artists and models" in the aniene valley, where carosi lived and worked for many years, becoming one of the most beloved interpreters of that cultural microcosm that attracted painters from across europe. Throughout his long and successful career, the artist participated in numerous important trade union, regional, and national exhibitions, garnering widespread acclaim from critics and the public of the time. His works have been exhibited in historic roman exhibitions and are now preserved in prestigious private collections and in public collections dedicated to the roman school and the landscape painters of the roman countryside, confirming his role as the guardian of an unforgettable period of painting and extraordinary visual poetry.
