the japonais pattern belongs to one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of christofle, when the maison embraced the influence of japanese decorative arts that transformed french design during the late 19th century. The model was already documented in christofle’s 1883 catalogue under the designation “contours japonais.” its elegant design is distinguished by elongated, subtly pointed handles framed by fine linear contours and restrained ornamental scrolls at the terminals.

this extensive 37-piece service for twelve comprises:

* 12 table forks
* 12 table spoons
* 12 teaspoons
* 1 large serving ladle

the pieces bear period christofle markings, including the full christofle signature and the historic cc-and-balance hallmark, a mark employed by the maison on silver-plated wares before 1935.

based on the pattern, hallmarks and presentation case, this particular service is attributed to the early 20th century, most probably circa 1900–1920. The dating is based on stylistic and hallmark evidence rather than a factory-recorded production year.

the set remains in very good antique condition. The silver-plated surfaces retain an attractive overall appearance, with light surface scratches, minor rubbing and traces of use consistent with age. Some localized wear is visible, particularly around the extremities of the handles, but the service has clearly not been subjected to the heavy wear frequently encountered on surviving period flatware.

the fitted case is also preserved and shows age-related wear to its exterior and interior lining. A faint original christofle impression remains visible inside the lid.

an elegant and increasingly difficult-to-find complete service from one of christofle’s historic patterns, equally compelling as functional tableware or as a collection of french decorative arts from the japonisme era.

dimensions: table forks and spoons approximately 21 cm / 8.27 in; teaspoons approximately 14–14.5 cm / 5.5–5.7 in. I would measure your ladle before publishing its exact length rather than take it from another set.

condition: very good antique condition. Light scratches and surface wear consistent with age and use; minor localized wear to the silver-plated finish. Period fitted case with age-related wear and a faint surviving christofle impression to the interior.
