Crafted from solid bronze with a dark green patinated finish, the lamp features a decorative base with a nautical scene of a sailing ship, clouds and waves. Rising from the base is a slender bronze stem supporting a wide, disc-shaped metal shade, detailed with subtle decorative bands. The most distinctive feature is the sculptural figure of a two-tailed mermaid or siren (sirena bicaudata), an ancient mythological sea figure later associated with the legend of Mélusine. The mermaid is beautifully integrated into the nautical composition of the base, with her two tails curling symmetrically on either side of her body. The restrained form of the shade and stem contrasts nicely with the more figurative and decorative base, giving the lamp a characteristic Swedish Grace appearance with elements that anticipate Scandinavian modernism. The original-style metal lamp holder is fitted with an integrated bakelit switch. A rare and unusual Swedish table lamp combining classical mythology, maritime imagery and the elegant simplicity associated with Swedish design of the period.
