The antique sideboard from Shanxi province is a beautiful example of Chinese cabinetry. Dated to the late 19th century, the coffer has a tapered shape that suggests it functioned as both an altar for ancestor worship and as a storage cabinet for clothes, textiles, and other household items.
Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the cabinet has a shallow, rectangular tabletop and provides ample storage with three drawers and interior shelving. Tapered spandrels flank the sides, shaped to a stepped design that continues to the apron for a geometric silhouette. A lacquered finish darkens the exterior to a deep brown, now beautifully aged with subtle wear and a rich patina.
