A classic piece of Chinese furniture, this pair of tall lacquered cabinets was likely part of a traditional wedding dowry, bestowed upon the groom by the bride's family filled with fine silks, linens, and other gifts. Dated to the late 19th century, the cabinets are crafted of elm to a sloping-stile design, defined by the slightly A-frame silhouette and overhung top.
Minimal and sophisticated, the cabinets are finished in sheer black lacquer and bare of decoration save for their beveled framing and hand-carved aprons. The aprons are carved to an openwork design of trailing vines and chrysanthemum blossoms, a symbol of autumn, longevity and joy. Ideal today as armoires or cupboards, the tall cabinets provide ample storage with three interior shelves and three small interior drawers.
