An exceptional late 19th-century Continental Renaissance Revival (Henri II Style) walnut console table or server base, showcasing superior European artisan … Read more An exceptional late 19th-century Continental Renaissance Revival (Henri II Style) walnut console table or server base, showcasing superior European artisan craftsmanship.The table features an original, deeply contoured and "earred" Rouge marble slab top (likely French Rouge Griotte or Rouge Languedoc), boasting a rich chocolate-red matrix heavily figured with dramatic, swirling white calcite veining. The marble sits flush upon a heavily carved walnut trestle frame. The architectural base is structured with robust, openwork scrolling volutes and bulbous turned support columns resting on a heavy stepped plinth. The upper frieze contains a single long drawer over a beautifully composed back wall, displaying four distinct recessed panels decorated with exceptionally fine, light-colored floral and botanical marquetry inlay. Some of the inlay is missing. The single long front drawer is constructed using highly precise, delicate narrow hand-cut dovetail joints. This confirms custom, bench-made artisan workshop construction rather than late 19th-century industrial assembly-line manufacturing.Secondary Woods: European oak and hardwood secondary structures throughout. The raw, unpolished underside of the heavy rouge marble top features a highly significant and beautifully preserved 19th-century workshop inscription written in a fluent German hand. The charcoal/grease pencil notations include:The artisan/stone mason signature: "F. M. Schlungen" (inscribed twice).A regional shipping and inventory routing mark: "Mondorf / 26", referencing the historic trade town of Mondorf along the Rhine River shipping corridor. The original rouge marble top is solid and structurally sound, completely free of cracks or major repairs, exhibiting only minor wear consistent with age and careful use. There is a deep scratch in the marble (see pictures). The walnut frame maintains a warm, rich historic patina. There is some damage to the wood, particularly, the left top and bottom right. The center medallion as well as some of the frame work in that area is missing. (see pics). There is minor, localized lifting to small areas of the delicate floral marquetry veneer, typical of 19th-century hide glue aging, which serves as a testament to its completely original, untouched, and unrestored condition.
