The stylized male figure … Read more A striking vintage copper wall plaque featuring a highly dimensional classical profile rendered in repoussé relief. The stylized male figure is depicted in profile with curled hair, a patterned headband and draped garment, giving the piece a distinctly Greco-Roman and Neoclassical character.

Worked from a relatively thin sheet of copper, the plaque has an appealing irregular, hand-worked form rather than a mechanically perfect circle. The relief is particularly effective across the face, hair and drapery, where the raised copper creates wonderful depth and shadow.

The surface has been left in its original aged state, with warm copper tones, darkened oxidation, mottling, surface variation and areas of natural patina throughout. These variations give the piece considerably more character than polished decorative copper.

Two small holes near the upper perimeter provide hanging points and are visible from both the front and reverse. The reverse beautifully reveals the repoussé construction and makes an interesting study of the metalworking itself.

Dimensions: Approximately 16–16.2 inches across and up to approximately 0.5 inch deep. The dimensions vary slightly due to the irregular hand-worked perimeter and dimensional repoussé surface.
