Pyne is considered a pioneer of surrealism in Indian art. He fused India folk elements with modern themes expressing surrealism through the use of free form images. While his contemporaries were experimenting with Cubism during the 1960s, Pyne explored a "world beyond." Through his surreal approach, he integrated Indian folk with modernism. “Thousands of thoughts play in my mind but the idea for a perfect picture is to create reality as a complete whole and encompass elements both the conscious and the subconscious.” – Kartick Chandra Pyne.
