Grützner, capturing a classic humorous genre scene of a cheerful robed monk in a dimly lit cellar drawing a sample of wine from a wooden cask into a glass. Rendered with warm candlelit ambiance, rich textures, and wonderful character expression. Signed "E. Grützner" in the lower right and housed in a decorative dark wood and gilt-accented frame.
Eduard Theodor Ritter von Grützner (1846–1925) was a notable German genre painter, closely associated with the Munich School and especially famous for humorous, richly detailed paintings of monks enjoying beer, wine, food, and the comforts of monastic life.
