This authentic early 20th-century cast iron doorstop depicts a traditional domestic African American woman figure rendered in classic "hands-on-hips" posture. Featuring a solid wedge-base hollow back, it retains a remarkable amount of its original cold-painted finish, including the blue dress, white crisscross shawl, white apron, and red patterned bandana (tignon).
The piece exhibits typical early manufacturing characteristics: precise two-piece sand casting, tight seam lines, smooth recessed reverse cavity, and natural paint wear revealing dark cast iron oxidation beneath. Highly collectible piece of Black Americana and early 20th-century American cast iron decor.

Authenticity Assessment
This doorstop displays all key physical markers of a period-original 1920s sand-casting:
Seam Integrity & Metal Texture: The perimeter seam is hand-finished and smooth, devoid of wide modern grinding marks or heavy flash. The interior reverse cavity exhibits a fine-grain sand texture without coarse pitting or bumpy modern casting voids.
Paint & Oxidation: The paint layer demonstrates true age-related cold-paint micro-crazing and flaking. Oxidation present on exposed iron areas is dark, inset micro-rust (chocolate brown/black tone) rather than bright orange surface rust typical of modern reproductions.
Weight & Proportions: At nearly 2 lbs for a 7.5" wedge-base figure, the density matches early high-grade American gray iron castings.Design Significance & Historical Provenance:
Cast iron doorstops produced during the American Golden Age of Iron Casting (1910s–1930s) represent a unique intersection of functional housewares and regional folk sculpture. This piece captures iconic early 20th-century vernacular figurative design with strong architectural lines, vibrant polychrome paint patina, and a distinct graphic silhouette.
Curator's Note:
An exceptional graphic accent for curated folk art, traditional, or eclectic interiors. Display as a sculptural bookend on library shelving, a hearthside feature, or atop a console table to inject authentic historic patina and rich color depth into modern residential spaces.
