Rare Antique c. 1910 J.W. McCoy Pottery Planter – "W" Mark with Base Drainage Hole
For sale is an iconic piece of American ceramic history: an authentic, antique J.W. McCoy Pottery Planter, dating back to approximately 1910. This exquisite piece hails from the golden era of the Roseville, Ohio potteries and represents a highly collectible period in early American art pottery. This planter is a beautiful window into early 20th-century American culture. During the 1910 Edwardian era, exotic and tropical houseplants were massive status symbols in affluent households. This specific planter was meticulously designed to accommodate those high-end tropical displays, featuring a functional, built-in drainage hole to preserve the delicate root systems of the era's most prized botanicals. The base of this planter features the highly coveted, crisp, impressed "W" maker's mark, a signature identifier tied to the specialized designers and early production lines of the J.W. McCoy era. The mark (pictured)is deeply set into the clay, confirming its authentic 1910-period lineage.
This piece is in excellent antique condition given its 110+ year age and boasts beautifully preserved majolica glaze with gorgeous depth and era-appropriate character. Solid, sturdy, with no major chips, structural cracks, or post-production repairs there are minor factory glaze pops and minimal base wear present, cementing its vintage pedigree.
This beautiful green piece stands a rare 13" in height and the diameter and base are both 7" round. It is surrounded, in the middle, by an apricot colored band and four musical cherubs, in orange, playing instruments and dancing. This piece is hand painted and displays similarities,in spots, to dripware.
History: During the early 20th century, the J.W. McCoy Pottery Company merged with the Brush Pottery Company to form Brush-McCoy (operating under that name roughly between 1911 and 1925). This particular style showcases a vibrant, blended Majolica glaze featuring deep leaf greens, golds, and browns. The ribbed body with a flared rim and stylized floral/foliage embossing is characteristic of their Arts & Crafts period lines.
Markings: Finding a piece explicitly signed "W" or marked from this era is a notable find, as many Brush-McCoy items from the 1910s were completely unmarked or only stamped with a simple style number.
