A richly decorated 1892 two-volume Darro Edition of Washington Irving’s The Alhambra, published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons and printed and bound by The Knickerbocker Press of New York.
The set features exceptionally attractive cream cloth bindings embellished with blue, green and gilt Moorish-inspired ornamentation. The interiors are equally decorative, with elaborate red-and-gold borders, ornamental typography, illustrated endpapers and historic photographic views of Granada and the architecture of the Alhambra.
Of particular interest, the set retains both original dark-blue cloth protective wrappers, each gilt-lettered on the spine with the title and corresponding volume number. These surviving protective covers are an uncommon and desirable feature.
The set is complete with all photographic plates and all original protective tissue guards present.
A beautiful addition to an antiquarian library, collected interior, Mediterranean or Spanish-inspired room, traditional study, or layered bookshelf display.
