It is by … Read more This painting was acquired by my grandmother back in 1955 from the Fairweather-Harden Art Gallery in Chicago. It is by the well known and listed artist, Arthur Osver (American, 1912-2006). It is framed in its original wood molding with a thin linen liner. It’s an oil on canvas and it’s signed (A. Osver), dated 1955 and titled by the artist “Giant Plant” “OSVER” in the front L.R. It measures 40” high x 24” wide x 2” deep. And it is in perfect condition.

His long and productive career took him from Chicago to New York to Europe and back, interweaving with the art of his time, and his paintings have been collected and exhibited all over the world. Nevertheless, he remained firmly rooted in the American Midwest, settling in St. Louis to teach and paint from 1960 until his death in 2006..

In 1940, Arthur Osver settled in New York's Greenwich Village and went on to teach at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and then Columbia University. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1952, and he visited Italy and France a number of times throughout that decade. He also taught at Yale University and Cooper Union in New York in the late 1950s.

Osver came to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1960, serving as Professor of Art at Washington University until his retirement in 1981. He was the third high-profile artist attracted to the university by Dean Kenneth Hudson, who also hired Max Beckmann and Philip Guston.

A retrospective exhibition of Osver's work was held at The Saint Louis Art Museum in March 2000. Known for painterly abstractions in glorious colors, Osver's latest body of work includes a new timely element.
