José María Mijares “The Three Muses” 1998 Original Oil on Canvas
About the Artist
José María Mijares (1921–2004) was an important Cuban modernist painter whose career bridged the Havana avant-garde and the Cuban-American art community in Miami. Born in Havana, Mijares studied at the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts and later taught there. During the late 1950s he became associated with Los Diez Pintores Concretos, an influential group that helped establish geometric abstraction within Cuban modernism. After settling in Miami in 1968, Mijares returned increasingly to figurative imagery while retaining the strong color, abstraction and rhythmic geometry that characterized his earlier work.
Mijares received numerous honors during his career, including Cuba's National Painting Prize and a Cintas Fellowship. His work has been exhibited internationally, and in 1998—the same year this painting was created—the Smithsonian Archives of American Art recorded an extensive oral-history interview with Mijares in his Miami home and studio.
About This Piece
Created in 1998, The Three Muses is an original oil on canvas featuring three elongated, highly stylized figures rendered in Mijares' distinctive late-career figurative language. Brilliant passages of cobalt blue, red, green, pink and yellow contrast dramatically against the warm copper-toned background, while the figures are constructed from an imaginative arrangement of geometric and biomorphic forms.
Measuring approximately 20½" W × 26½" H, the painting is signed “Mijares” at the lower left. Particularly important, the work is accompanied by an original 1998 Certificate of Authenticity signed by José María Mijares himself, identifying the painting as The Three Muses, oil on canvas, and affirming it as an original work. The certificate is dated December 2, 1998 in Miami and reproduces an image of this specific painting, providing unusually strong documentation directly from the artist.
