I have a recurring fantasy that, while fossil hunting, I come across the remains of a ceramic vessel that could only have been made by a dexterous creature. Yet it lies within a geologic layer that predates known human activity. There is evidence that animals have pecked at it, bored into it, and clawed at its surface. It has been crushed and broken by the forces of nature. There is no rational explanation for why it exists. It will continue its evolution until it is ground back into the earth’s crust, beginning the cycle of becoming something else.

These eviscerated vessels are stand-ins for the vicissitudes of human experience. Despite their ordeals, some recognizable part of them remains. See less
