Otto de Souza Aguiar (1938–2006) was a Brazilian artist known for richly decorative figurative paintings combining vivid color, texture, gilded details and an unmistakable sense of elegance. Formally trained in graphic art and drawing in Rio de Janeiro, Aguiar also worked in fashion and traveled extensively in Europe, experiences that strongly influenced the sophisticated figures and theatrical settings found throughout his work. His paintings were exhibited internationally and entered numerous private, corporate and public collections.

About the Painting

Night at the Opera is a vibrant original oil on canvas depicting an elegantly dressed group gathered in an ornate theater box. Aguiar's background in fashion and theater is especially evident here, with elaborate hats and costumes, jewel-like colors, richly textured surfaces and decorative floral and architectural details creating the pageantry of an evening at the opera. The work is signed prominently by Aguiar at the lower left and again on the reverse. The image measures approximately 23.25" H × 18.5" W, presented in an ornate frame measuring approximately 29" H × 24.25" W. See less
