Means in the lower right. A hand-lettered label on the stretcher bar gives the title as "Sparrow Dancer."

A standing figure in a wide-brim hat with a woven band, wrapped in a striped trade blanket, with four sparrows around him. Two perch at the shoulders, one sits in his open palm, and the blanket stripe runs the full height of the canvas in rust, cream, tan and gray. Means painted flat and graphic with hard edges and earth color, and this is a strong example of the approach. The face and the birds carry the fine detail against a soft gradient sky.

Means was born in Yankton, South Dakota in 1946 and moved to Denver with his family at fifteen. His originals sold through Rawson Galleries in Jackson Hole, Big Horn Gallery in Cody, Driscol Gallery in Denver, and Indian Paint Brush Gallery in Vail, and he exhibited in Denver, Aspen, Santa Fe, Vail, Fort Collins and Cody.

Housed in a narrow gold-tone metal gallery frame, no glazing. Framed size is 30.25 inches wide by 36.25 inches tall. See less
