The composition is square and divided plainly: pale sky above, deep golden-brown earth below, and the buildings straddling the line between them. The main barn carries a broad gray gambrel roof that peaks high and drops steeply on both sides, with a single black vent at the apex. Its white wall is laid in with broad horizontal strokes, the edges left slightly ragged so the boards show. A lower shed with its own gray roof extends to the right, punctuated by three small black windows and a doorway. Wheatley leaves the ground and sky almost featureless, so the eye stays on the silhouette. Brushwork is visible throughout, and the paint carries around the sides of the canvas.
