Wheatley pulls the viewer right up to the building. The gray roofline cuts a long diagonal across the upper half of the canvas against a clear blue sky, and below it the wall fills the frame, built from narrow vertical strokes of white and warm gray that let each board read separately. At the center hangs a barn quilt in saturated yellow and deep blue, its interlocking bands meeting at a small four-part square in the middle, the one piece of hard-edged geometry in an otherwise soft surface. A thin horizontal rail runs above it. The scale of the crop makes the wall feel architectural rather than pastoral. The paint continues around the sides of the canvas.
