Wheatley keeps the buildings small and high in the composition, leaving most of the canvas to the land. The barn is white and pale gray, its walls built from short horizontal and vertical strokes so the boards separate under the light, with a second gabled roof and a narrow dormer rising behind it. Two small black windows sit under the eave. The ground below runs in wide horizontal bands, rust and burnt orange nearest the building softening down into deep olive green, the edges blurred where one color settles into the next. Above, the sky is pale blue-gray with cloud brushed thinly across it. The paint carries around the sides of the canvas.
