square, diamond-shaped ceramic tile, entirely hand-decorated, dating back to the late 1950s or early 1960s. The work was created on an industrial, double-fired red-paste tile from the historic c.i.s.a. (ceramiche industriali di sassuolo) factory in sassuolo, as certified by the embossed mark on the back of the tile. The front surface features a refined, glossy black glaze with a veined, marble-like effect, on which the profile of a young woman in traditional sardinian costume is entirely hand-painted. The thick, cold-patterned paintwork features rich brush strokes, creating a strong color contrast between the black base glaze and the red, yellow, and blue pigments of the figure. The stylistic attribution lies in the rigorous and geometric decomposition of the headdress and the dress's decorations, which unmistakably recall the famous illustrative modules introduced by edina altara and developed by the 20th-century sardinian ceramic school. The orange signature at the bottom right, though complex and not easily decipherable, features an intertwined monogram attributable to one of the sardinian or emilian master decorators active in the special collaborations initiated in those years by c.i.s.a. For the creation of designer tiles for prestigious furnishing inserts or as decorative panels.
