straw boater, little black top, one very patient camel, one delighted handler. The press lost their minds. And somewhere in the crowd, a painter took note. That painter was rené peyre — a true montmartre character who kept his easel on the place du tertre through the heyday of the 1950s and '60s.

peyre worked this scene up almost certainly from a press photograph, and honestly? we adore him for it. This isn't a museum piece pretending to be one. It's a gloriously silly, gloriously glamorous moment, caught in oil by someone who lived the era.
