The composition is vertical and spare. Wheatley gives the barn almost the full height of the canvas, its wall built from close vertical strokes of white and cool gray so the boards read one at a time rather than as a single flat surface. A gray roof slopes down from a high peak, and three black openings punctuate the wall: a narrow window at the gable, a second below it, and a small four-pane window low on the right. Horizontal seams divide the lower wall into panels. Above the roofline the sky is the warm peach and cream of first light with drifts of pale blue-gray cloud worked wet into wet. The brushwork stays visible throughout, and the paint continues around the sides of the canvas.
