Item Description:
An exceptionally charming and beautifully preserved matching pair of mid-century Balinese narrative folk sculptures, this solid hardwood set depicts an aristocratic couple in traditional kneeling ceremonial postures. Originating from the prominent post-war artisan cooperatives of the Ubud region (circa 1960s–1970s), the male figure is handsomely adorned in a formal, high-crested ceremonial headcloth (Udeng), traditional chest bands, and a hand-detailed sarong, while the female counterpart displays an elegant, multi-layered floral tiara, traditional matching necklace, and an intricately patterned dress.
Masterfully hand-chiseled from single, un-hollowed cross-sections of old-growth Balinese Teakwood, both figures exhibit excellent physical mass and density. The master carver has beautifully combined the deep, warm honey-biscuit tones of the seasoned timber with subtle, hand-detailed gold paint flourishes along their jewelry, borders, and headgear to accentuate the intricate fabric folds and traditional geometries.
Sourced from a prominent historical collection, the pair stands in completely flawless vintage condition. Following a rigorous curatorial audit, the dense hardwood is confirmed to be entirely clear of any open grain checks, environmental warping, or splits—a phenomenal testament to the historic seasoning of the teak core. Displaying an exceptional level of soulful, expressive facial work, this authentic, complementary pair serves as a highly engaging cultural centerpiece for premium mantle displays, fine ethnographic art portfolios, or luxury residential architectural staging.
