A striking original A.L. Wilson sculpture dating to 1971, torch cut from an industrial steel I-beam and transformed into a wonderfully whimsical owl. This is an especially charming and unusual piece as it integrates the "U.S.A." incised on the original beam and centers it above a small heart cutout.
Albert Leon Wilson (1920–1999) developed a distinctive body of metal sculpture in which industrial iron and steel were transformed into whimsical, imaginative figures and animals. His work was exhibited and commissioned from the late 1960s onward, with examples documented in public and private collections including that of Governor Nelson Rockefeller. He was also an accomplished art director, illustrator, and photographer,receiving more than 20 graphic-art awards during his years in Rochester.
The underside is stamped “1971 A.L. WILSON ©1968.” The sculpture retains its original aged surface with mottled bronze/brown patina, oxidation, scratches, and the rough character of the underlying industrial metal. Felt pads are present on the underside.
A wonderful example of Wilson's work with excellent Brutalist and industrial-art appeal.
