Pair of 20th-Century Bronze-Patinated Female Figurine Sculptures.
A decorative pair inspired by the celebrated French Belle Époque Bacchantes figures made after sculptors such as Ernest Rancoulet and Auguste Moreau.
In classical mythology, Bacchantes—also known as Maenads—were the female followers of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility, theatre and ecstatic celebration. Their lively dances and musical festivities became a popular subject among late 19th- and early 20th-century French sculptors.
These elegantly modelled figures are presented in animated, complementary poses. One Bacchante raises a tambourine above her head, while the other holds aloft a cup or chalice, representing music, wine and celebration. Both wear flowing Greco-Roman-style drapery, with their hair arranged in elaborate classical coiffures.
The figures are made from cast metal with a rich bronze-effect patinated finish. Warm copper-coloured highlights and natural variations across the surfaces emphasise the modelling and give the sculptures an attractively aged appearance.
Each figure stands upon an elaborate circular pedestal decorated with floral garlands, beaded borders and classical leaf motifs, mounted on a mahogany-finished wooden plinth. Both sculptures retain their original applied metal title plaques inscribed Bacchante®.
Complete companion pairs retaining their corresponding attributes—the tambourine and cup—are more difficult to find than individual examples. Displayed together, their balanced poses and substantial scale create an impressive and highly decorative composition.
They would make striking statement pieces for a mantelpiece, console table, entrance hall or an interior inspired by neoclassical, Belle Époque or traditional European design.
These are decorative 20th-century reproductions inspired by earlier French sculptural models and are not presented as original works by Rancoulet, Moreau or another named artist.
