Arthur Spurr Templeman (1886 - 1938), a grandson of jockey Simeon, was apprenticed to William Grey & John Hallick.

He had his first ride in public on Gardener's Garter at Derby on November 15, 1901, a rank outsider which ran unplaced in the Friary Nursery Plate.

It was not until some four years later that he rode his first winner: Frigid, at Lingfield, May 6, 1905. In a two horse race, Frigid started odds-on and made al the running.

An early big winner was Velocity in the 1905 Cambridgeshire.


Velocity seemed to walk lame in the paddock - on the inside of his thigh he had a large lump, probably the result of a kick - but he galloped to the post freely enough. Velocity was inclined to show temper at the start, not helped by Bibiana.

There was considerable delay at the post, pricipally due to Bibiana's refusal to face the barrier. When they eventually got away, it was Velocity, adorned in hood and blinkers, who made the early running. The King attended the meeting, and watched as Velocity and Arthur held on to win by a length from Santry. There were eighteen runners, one more than the previous year, when Hackler's Pride had won for the second year in succession.

Arthur won the 1905 Derby Cup on Catscradle

The race was run on Thursday 16 November 1905. The race distance was this year increased to a mile and six furlongs making it almost a replica of the Cesarewitch. Curiously, the three horses most in demand in the betting ring were all drawn on the unfavourable outside: Burgundy (1), Pradella (2) and Imari (3). Cape Verde bolted on the way up, and ran to the top of the hill before being caught.

Arthur Templeman won the 1906 Victoria Cup on Catapault.

His last winner was Silver Thrush at Ripon on May 9, 1914.

Arthur's last ever ride came on New York at Windsor on November 6, 1914.

He went to India to ride and later took up training there.

He also rode one winner in Ireland.

His brothers Fred & Clark (1885-1953) were also jockeys.

Their father William (c1858-1914) went bankrupt in 1898.

Arthur died at Twickenham on April 23, 1938. He left £307. See less
