This beautifully executed example is decorated with an intricate Chinoiserie garden scene, depicting a robed figure within an idyllic landscape of flowering trees, stylized foliage, architectural elements and water. Delicate trailing branches continue around the reverse, creating a particularly graceful composition from every angle.

The decoration is rendered entirely by hand in jewel-like shades of cobalt blue, iron red, green and yellow against luminous white porcelain. Finely applied gilt accents and broad gilt borders at the rim and foot complete the sophisticated design.

The underside is particularly noteworthy, bearing the hand-painted inscription:

“Dessiné et peint entièrement à la main / Made in France”

followed by:

“Exclusively for Bergdorf & Goodman”

The base additionally bears the blue Atelier Le Tallec cipher, decorator’s initials CS, date coding consistent with 1996, and the separately painted inventory/reference number 171.

Founded in Paris in the early 20th century, Atelier Camille Le Tallec became celebrated for its exceptionally accomplished hand-painted porcelain, drawing inspiration from the great French porcelain traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. The atelier’s work was retailed and commissioned by prestigious luxury houses, most famously Tiffany & Co.

The explicit Bergdorf Goodman exclusive inscription makes this an especially appealing example of Le Tallec’s private-label production for the luxury New York retailer.

At 9 inches high, the cachepot has excellent scale and presence. Equally striking displayed unfilled as an objet d’art or used as a cachepot for an orchid or other decorative planting.
