Original late-Victorian watercolor landscape, signed “J. Newlands” and dated 1876, depicting a shepherd or herder driving a flock of sheep along a rural track beside a stream and stone-arched bridge.
The finely detailed composition is rendered in muted greens, browns, gray-blue and ochre, with rolling hills, stands of trees and open countryside extending into the distance. The small figure and flock give scale to the broad pastoral landscape, while the stone bridge and waterway provide a strong architectural focal point.
An important handwritten inscription on the original wooden backing appears to read:
“Leadburn Moor
South from Edinburgh
on the road to Peebles
1875”
Leadburn lies south of Edinburgh on the historic route toward Peebles in the Scottish Borders. By the mid-19th century it was also served by the Peebles Railway, which opened through Leadburn in 1855. Historical descriptions of the area identify the Edinburgh–Peebles high road as passing directly through Leadburn.
The verso inscription predates the signed watercolor by one year and may record the location and date of a preliminary sketch, visit, or earlier version of the composition. The inscription cannot be confirmed as being in the artist’s hand.
The subject also reflects a familiar feature of 19th-century Scottish rural life: livestock continued to be moved along roads and tracks even as long-distance droving declined with the expansion of rail transport during the Victorian period.
Presented under glass with an aged brown mat in an older molded wood frame.
