Heldner is regarded as one of the significant names in 20th-century Louisiana painting. He lived and worked in New Orleans with his wife, the noted artist Colette Pope Heldner, and both became closely associated with the city's artistic community. The couple painted extensively throughout southern Louisiana, finding inspiration in its bayous, swamps, waterways and moss-draped landscapes, as well as in the streets and architecture of the French Quarter.

During the Heldners' years there, the French Quarter was home to a lively and famously bohemian community of artists, writers and colorful local characters. Knut Heldner, who received his early artistic training in Europe, brought a distinctly painterly approach to the Louisiana landscape, capturing not simply its appearance but its light, atmosphere and often mysterious mood.
