A captivating, substantial 1930s modernist expressionist oil painting by the celebrated artist Vadim Chernoff (1888–1954). Measuring a commanding 49 inches in height, this museum-quality piece depicts a dark, craggy monolithic rock formation rising dramatically out of swirling, turbulent blue ocean waves. The composition masterfully balances the rhythmic brushwork that foreshadowed American Abstract Expressionism with the ethereal, structured light distinct to European Symbolism.
Provenance & Exhibition History
This artwork features exceptional, verified exhibition provenance. Fully intact on the reverse corner of the frame is the original vintage exhibition label from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). The label officially documents its acceptance and display at the prestigious One Hundred and Thirty-Fourth Annual Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture in 1939. The jury inventory stub remains firmly affixed and is clearly typed with the artist’s name profile ("Vadim Alex...").

The original wood frame shows light, honest age-appropriate surface wear, minor scuffs, and small corner chips that add to its authentic period character. The critical 1939 PAFA exhibition paper label on the reverse is partially weathered but entirely legible, firmly anchoring its historical significance. less
