An antique Japanese lacquer and ivory carved-relief wall panel, Meiji period (1898-1912), featuring an applied chrysanthemum and butterfly motif. Truly stunning.

This decorative artwork uses traditional Shibayama-style, carved ivory-applied pieces on a black lacquered panel. In this case, depicting a chrysanthemum and small butterfly or moth, all in high relief.

It is surrounded within a polished, red-brown hard-wood frame with elaborately stained floral detail surrounding.

The panel is in very good condition commensurate with its age. It has two cracks in the black lacquer at the top and one on the side on the frame. There are some scratches along the backside of the frame which are not visible in the front. See detailed photos.

Ivory is a hard, cream-colored material obtained from the tusks of elephants, walruses, narwhals, and other animals. It has been prized for centuries for its beauty, durability and rarity, and has been used extensively in decorative arts in Western and Oriental cultures for centuries.
